It might surprise one to know that bats are a common staple with our indigenous brothers/sisters. I have eaten many in the past with no ill effects, but as with many dangerous foods like birds, bats and cane toads, its all in the handling and preparation - ya got to cook'm to buggery.
I remember sharing a bat with a wise old aboriginal friend some 20 years my senior (now deceased), who remarked: "Ya got to be careful with old bats, son, coz they bight, but they're very tasty if you know how to handle them," he winked.
Naturally, I concluded he was referring to his two wives coz he laughed for near on 5 minutes.
There were over one thousand people attended his funeral, including the Prime Minister of the time, such was his fame, and all remarked on the old boy's sense of humour. I miss him still.
