Deposits with the major banks are 100% safe.
You cant compare the Aust. banking system which has the RBA behind it to the unregulated banking system in the US where there are 1000s of small banks. ANd even there in this chaos no depositors have lost any money, only shareholders - same with Northern Rock in the UK.
Things are bad but no need to spread panic.
