A mate of mine hurt his back....... from hours of leaning over slightly at a lathe. Just the weight in the body above the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae puts huge pressure on the discs.
Anyway, his employment prospects became stuffed for similar work, he knew it would be hard to continue, anyway.
He had to retrain, it took some time to do that and then some time again to get a job. He eventually got his back problems sorted out, gets less income now than when he was working at what he was originally trained for... the insurance people put him through a bit, too....
I think sometimes that the OSH is a bit over the top, but the advice I got about lifting and saving your back was invaluable. Funny enough, I tried to warn my brother about his lifting procedure years ago. Because he didn't do much of that work, he ignored me....... Later on, he suffered terribly with his back. Sometimes you have to go through things to learn or be close to someone going through things to understand.
