A 737 probably could make it from Australia to LA, with one or more stops on the way. Trouble is, who would want to fly for so long cooped up in what is essentially a short haul aircraft?? Not me!
Whether VBA can fine Boeing would depend on the original contracts - you can't go adding clauses now.
I'm guessing that there are other issues surrounding the launch of V that mean management is not too worried about the delay. I imagine it would be quite easy to wet-lease a couple of 777's in this climate for a couple of months to tide them over the delay, if they really had all the dots lined up, ready to go.
So I think the Boeing strike is a convenient scapegoat.
