how safe are banks, page-58

Trying to work out how safe our banks are has nothing to do with history; you've got to look at the present. And the current things that I look at are:
    1) Some of the big banks have either been telling lies about their balance sheets or simply do not understand their balance sheets.
    2) Our banks are the only ones in the developed world without some type of explicit guarentee for deposits.
    3) The govt have been assuring everyone just how safe they are, yet Gillard showed they don't have all the facts (even simple ones). But who does have the facts?
    4) Money ain't getting easier to come by and offshore borrowings from the wholesale market makes up a large part of our banks money.
    5) I am sure that there are a heap of other reasons, but these are enough for me to say that our banks are not as safe as what the pollies are saying.

I do think that if a bank failed, then the govt probably would do something, but the option is not between a cave in the Marg River or smooth transition to take over.
I'm sure depositers would eventually get their money back, but it might be in dribs and drabs over a number of years. Who knows??
