If you've never bought precious metal, and you want to have some physical:

First: I would suggest you buy a gold/silver bullion coin from a dealer. That way you get an idea for what it looks like, and what it feels like in your hand (gold is unmistakeable once you've seen the real things). Coins command a higher premium than bars.

Ebay: - Never buy from China. Only Australian sellers. Use paypal. If you don't know what you're doing - don't do it! I do buy from ebay. Buy some digital scales with at least 0.1gram accuracy. That may put your mind at ease too. 1 TROY oz = 31.1 grams. Bullion bars must have mint marks (e.g. a round blobby perth mint stamp). Coins are harder to forge.

DO NOT BUY MORGAN DOLLARS (US) - there are fakes from China.

Take purchase to a coin dealer, and ask them if its authentic. If it isn't - start a dispute with paypal, and they will freeze the funds in the sellers account.
