what to do ...

Now granted there are a lot of intelligent minds on this forum , here is a question that I hope will tap into the resources this site makes available .

I have a friend that has just cashed out of the previously lucrative property market in New Zealand and now has close on NZD$3mill in the bank and very little debt.

New Zealand banks , as yet , only guarantee NZD$20,000.

What would your suggestions be ? Bearing in mind this is his life savings , he has a wife and child , and a modest income and at this stage I think he is more into wealth preservation than anything else.
