I don't think this is a good appointment for Suncorp. I was at the ASX when Elmer was CEO. He certainly wasn't universally respected or well regarded by the rank and file. I suspect many senior management simply wanted to 'survive' Elmer's tenure and Elmer certainly gave the impression we were a stepping stone to much loftier ambitions. Elmer was largely seen as a self promoter with little regard for staff. When the Tabcorp thing blew up the consensus was that it 'couldn't happen to a nicer bloke'.
