In the longer term, vaccines and (possibly) drugs are the key. But there are absolutely unavoidable time costs in those - clinical trials are a necessity not an option, no matter what some would have you think. You need to ensure the treatment you’re pushing out is both safe and effective if you want to avoid making the situation much, much worse. That requires time to get the required data - couple of months, minimum, then at least another few months to scale production to the levels needed to cover the whole population.
