The market's main function is to provide liquidity, which means trading. "Long term investors" need not even look at share prices as its meaningless until they choose to sell. But then who would they sell to if there's no liquid market? There's always the option to invest in private companies if you don't want exposure to share price fluctuations, but of course these are illiquid.
