That sounds like a tough journey that you've been on. I'll bet you've had some very very scary days.
Your experience in the US sounds like a nightmare. I also had a nightmare trip in 2008, mine was in India and I got stuck there for 8 weeks with the pneumonia from Hell. I didn't go to hospital but i needed to visit a hospital every 12 hours for an injection. I have had pneumonia 6 times. India was the most scary because I was alone.
My problem has been with me my whole life, i'm in my mid 50s, so I don't actually know any better, it's just normal for me. Luckily for me, my father was a doctor and I grew up surrounded by doctors. Most weekends, we had 5-10 doctors in the house, so I suppose that I always felt cared for and secure even though there were several times that I almost died. When I was small, my father used to often take my blood pressure, weigh me, hook me up to the EEG or the ECG, do spirometry tests, and sometimes he would take blood and we would look at it under the microscope....he made it a game and I valued the experience as dad-time. In hindsight, i suppose he was checking up on me. He would also take me on house calls at night, i would hold the torch and shine it on the house numbers and then I would sit and wait while he examined the patient. On Saturdays, he would take me on his rounds to visit the old people and sometimes the dying. I suppose I learnt that a lot of people are sick. Such is life.
About lungs. The right and left lungs are not symmetrical. The right lung has three segments, the left has two. There are other differences too. It's quite interesting.
I too am being a covid-19 hermit. I think it's the best strategy. Your condition sounds like a really hard thing to deal with.
I wonder if stem cells can help us? I imagine it might take quite a long time to find out. Many years. I feel hopeful that people will benefit someday, even if not us.
