Never said it was the flu. The professionals are saying that the idea of a lockdown is so that "as the virus moves through the population, we can hopefully slow it down enough so that we don't overwhelm the medical services."
Yes, ok, granted. But there is also the chance that we slow it down too much. So much so that herd immunity does not happen and the lock down continues for a year or more. As the government has said, a lock down longer than 6 months is not sustainable economically. As the many hundreds of thousands who have already been financially ruined will attest to. Many will never recover. They will be buried under insurmountable debt for decades.
In the absence of a vaccine, we need the virus to move quickly through the community. And before someone else chimes in. Yes, yes we know. We must try and protect the vulnerable. Yes, we mustn't overwhelm the medical services but at present we are slowing it down too much.
