The challenge to the "Pell Innocence" advocates on these threads is:

If the Civil Court finds him guilty and appropriately applies penalties, will these same posters accept the Civil Court decision just as they accept the Criminal one now.

But I guess some Catholic ideologues won't appreciate the implications here !

I was in Ireland when Pell was charged and my neighbour, a retired Bishop, asked me"
" As an Australian and from what you know, do you think Cardinal Pell is guilty"

As they say locally, that put me in a pucker, so to be diplomatic I said:
"Only God really knows that, your Grace"

"His Grace" thought Cannon Law in Rome for over 20 years.

He gave me a rye smile.

The huge problem that the Catholic Church has is follows:
-It believes that Cannon Law takes precedence to loal Criminal/Civil laws
-It believes that the Sacrement of confession is the ultimate judge/jury in matters of Sin( Crime)
-It believes that what is confessed in Confession is sealed and not available to others. ( Priest is God's agent)

Presbyterianism,( Calvin Knox etc) which has greatly influenced our Anglo culture does not recognise the Sacrement of Confession and
that is why Catholic Priests are expected to break the seal of confession and report confessed criminals to civil authorities.
And as Shakespeare said " ah, but there's the rub"!
