Ties were used as a sign of wealth, initially. AT a time when cloth was very expensive, those who wanted to flaunt their wealth or needed admiration, wore these extra length pieces of scarves -ties for the males. It was a non-utilitarian piece of attire, simply for flaunting wealth. The cravat, though has an interesting history.
