Why has the ABC thought it necessary to broadcast this lengthy defence of its reporting of the Cardinal Pell saga?

But it looks like the ABC feels it has a need to cover its backside in the light of the cardinal being found not guilty instead of being hung, drawn & quartered as it seems the ABC expected.
I don't remember having seen the ABC delivering such a mea culpa about anything for as long as I can remember.
Are they fearing a defamation suit?
