Early in 1955 Bert attended the annual fast-track race meeting held at the Invercargill Showgrounds.
He had decided to have a final go with his double knocker Indian around the quarter mile track and for a while he went very well.
Russell Wright, who was still waiting for his Vincent to arrive, competed on his AJS while Norman Hayes turned up on his Triumph.
Both noted Burt's continuing determination to slide his bike, speedway-style, and kept well out of his way. Others were not so aware of the hazard and several were almost forced into the fence as Bert slewed this way and that.
Finally the fuel tank fell off and he coasted to a halt, much to everybody's relief....
