In organisational psychology, it's common for teams to appoint a 'devil's advocate' or a contrarian view in order to create a robust conversation. Which is good. Why? Many epic catastrophes have been documented because of 'group think'.



I think WE might technically meet the term of "devil's advocate" as a committed opponent. Check the definition: "One who argues against a cause or position, not as a committed opponent but simply for the sake of argument or to determine the validity of the cause or position" - Urban dictionary

Like others, I do wonder about WE's motivation if he has no skin in the game and yet continues to make critical comment. It's a bit like my family, they all chirp about what needs to be done in the backyard or complain about my recent chainsaw pruning but they're never in the backyard helping me out. So, I tell them give them a place at the table and listen to their concerns IF they buy in and help me out. Otherwise it's just white noise to me. Similarly, I'll give WE a place at the table if he becomes a committed opponent. Until then, IMO, he's just like one of my chirping kids.
