We can walk into the casino and observe a roulette wheel that has 40 numbers, where 20 are black numbers and 20 are red numbers.. and if we see 10 reds spun on the roulette wheel in a row.. with only 2 black ones out of 12... you would probably just think that was an anomaly.. and you'd be correct.

Because we know that all else being equal, over a larger sample the blacks will come roaring back ... say over 10,000 spins we should get around 5,000 red numbers and 5,000 black ones (assuming the wheel only has red and black numbers).

What Mesoblast have shown is that in a roulette wheel that has 40 numbers, where 35 of the numbers on that wheel are black (approx 88% of ventilatored patients die of COVID19 ARDS) and only 5 are red numbers... after 12 spins, they managed to spin up 10 red numbers out of 12 spins.

That is why although the results are a very small sample size, they are very compelling.
