Most tin is used for solder ,and as far as I am aware there are no commercial substitutes .
The point about scarcity is that Tin may one day be treated in the same way that platinum and palladium are due to scarcity .The fact is industry are going to have to come up with another way to connect electronics .
In the next few years the penny will drop and we will certainly see exponential price rises for tin in much the same way as the last one .The recent spike was a warning that there are tin supply problems appearing now ,and there is no long term answer .We have peak tin now and will be the first industrial metal to become industrially extinct .Governments and industry have their eyes shut at the moment ,although Indonesia has recognised this fact previously .Can you imagine the entire electronics industry grinding to a halt ? Could happen if they dont find a commercial replacement and retool for it in a very short time frame .
