Lithium is priced as a precious metal and used as an industrial metal in car batteries. Car manufacturers want a cheaper alternative so that the gains from cheaper energy are available to them and not to lithium producers.

Ultracapacitors, zinc batteries, salt batteries, enhanced lead acid batteries, enhanced MgFe batteries and their hybrid combinations are all cheaper. Compressed air has possibilities.
