Yes, I see cluster has already answered your question. Goldmoney.com could be a prototype of a possible new monetary system, and the great thing is that it can co-exist alongside the doomed current fiat system. Paper money is changed into digital grams of gold or silver.
Some merchants will already accept payments in digital grams, but otherwise you simply electronically reconvert back to your paper currency as you need it. The digital grams are fully backed by actual bullion held in a London vault.
Perhaps later on the system can be expanded to include other fungibles, just as silver has now been added as an option to gold at goldmoney.com. The other precious metals are obvious candidates, but what about divisible, enduring, storable, and transportable commodities as well? Say bales of hay, grams of hashish, or bottles of quality certified scotch for example, or pounds of zinc, lead, nickel or wheat.
