I think the following is the allegory your'e alluding too.

I see Dr Hook as the Drunken attention seeking fool who is the leader of the band. For our purposes lets call him "TWIGGY" .Basically he sails from disaster to travesty become more drunken,lewd and increasingly insane. However disasterous this false prophet becomes he still has has his followers. Twiggy vomits on the stage "how creative" say the fans, "no one vomits like Andrew" say the devotees. Finally when this demented genius dies in a Bizarre gardening accident and the followers are forced to find another Messiah the unwaranted worship ceases.
So it was at Murrin Murrin.
