This is my understanding:

He has a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering (1972) and a Bachelors degree in Forestry Management (mid 70s) He has a PhD in organic chemistry (1981) and was a post doctoral researcher in biochemistry – specifically in relation to the development of a means of preventing the formation of carcinogenic n-nitrosoamines in the gut during the digestive systems of animals and humans. This research was done at the NN Petrov Institute of Oncology. The other degrees were awarded by the forest technical academy.

As he was teaching medical students and treating patients, he decided to pursue a medical degree as well. The state USSR refused to let him do this because he already had a “good job and lots of degrees”, but allowed him to do all the subjects and registered him as a medical practitioner.

In 1999 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Ecology and Life Sciences. He was also awarded an Honorary DSc that year. It was only the 7th Honorary DSc awadred by the academy in its 200 year history. (Unlike in Australia, it is virtually impossible to become a full professor in Russia without a DSc so most senior academics there have both a phd and a DSc.)

He came to Australia in 1990 at the request of the CSIRO where he worked with Dr Adrian Wallace and his team at the Division of Forest Products near Monash Uni in Clayton on an inter governmental scientific exchange program.

Members of the Melbourne Russian community in Russia persuaded him to stay in Australia and resume his health practioner work but he decided not to pursue medical registration in Australia, preferring instead to work as a Naturaopath.
