About 96 C.E., 26 years after the destruction of Jerusalem, John wrote about things that would take place in the future. This was a parallel prophecy of what Jesus said would be a sign of his presence and the conclusion of the system of things that he gave in answer to the question he was asked. (Matthew 24:3) While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples (Peter,James,Andrew and John) approached him privately, saying: “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things ?” John (the last remaining apostle) wrote the book of Revelation showing ''all these things'' that would indicate Jesus was ''near at the doors'' was still ahead. (Revelation 6:4) Another came out, a fiery-colored horse, and it was granted to the one seated on it to take peace away from the earth so that they should slaughter one another, and he was given a great sword. This is the same as what was foretold in the gospel accounts. (Luke 21:10) Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. You can follow each of the other things Jesus said would be aspects of the composite sign of his presence in the gospel accounts. John was confirming these lay ahead. So what is so special is that the sign of taking ''peace away from the earth'' has had only one fulfillment in mankind's history. Historians are in agreement that was in the year 1914. All the other aspects of the composite sign occurring since that time show Jesus is ''near at the doors''.

John was writing for the people in his time, not unknown generations thousands of years in the future. The Christians of the time, just like you, fully expected the return of Jesus in power and glory during their lifetime, which is what they wrote. It's all there to see and read. It can't be ignored.
