My gap theory started out from things I read in various places & I was curious as to its veracity.
I have been studying them for years now & in AGY particular case they certainly do show a high degree of accuracy.
Going back to when AGY was recapitalised back in 2014, the data shows that as the company has developed so has the degree of certainty of the theory.
The last 12 months has only seen a very small drop in the percentage of closes for both types of gaps but they are still closing at a very high rate.
What is behind them I guess is open to interpretation but imo (similar to yours) is that it is the mm's manipulating the sp for lots of small profits but that is just a guess.

I have some really interesting stats on various other prices patterns that I will post if I can ever get them into order.
Statistical events using things like high volume & high range for instance show very high returns & are also likely being traded by professionals.
When looking at the statistical data of price & volume in conjunction with the chart analysis is very informative.
Any way attached are some numbers for you.
The larger shows the data in overlapping 500 periods
The smaller shows the gaps from 2014 up to the end of the bull run.
I have not done this for weekly data but the weekly is better again.
