    This is why bailouts are generally not sensible except in a very few and isolated cases.

    A bailout, if applied to entire industry sectors and politically connected companies (for example those with powerful unions) destroys the fabric of the capitalist system and has a ripple on effect as all industries then lobby for their bailout.

    Bankruptcy laws in the US are to allow time and conditions for companies to work there way out of umworkable situations that they have contractually got themselves into.


    However it is generally presented these days by the media as a there being only two alternatives... bailout or fail.

    This is not the case at all, but makes for a quick and scary headline that sells papers and grabs viewers with a catchy soundbite.
