One of the main backers of a proposed minerals freight terminal in Tennant Creek says Darwin's port may not be equipped to handle large volumes of ore from the region.
Businessman Bill Gibbins is negotiating with the Northern Territory Government and mining companies to develop a shared bulk freight facility to service the Barkly region in central Australia.
The $50 million proposal has been given major project status by the NT Government.
Mr Gibbins says many parties are interested, but the idea could be limited by the capacity of port facilities in Darwin.
"We are looking at about six million tonne a year or something going through the place and that is about probably the current capacity of the port for bulk tonnages. So they've got a bit of work to do there, but it's certainly an exciting project," he said.
