That journey was a VW fact-finding expedition see if there were issues in Chile’s Atacama area that might stop VW taking supplies.
.....And the upshot seems to be that all criteria was met and “solutions” (payment??) would be found to deal with any local issues.

To me this is confirmed by @Egeria’s link that VW, in May 2020, become the largest shareholder of Guoxuan High-tech batteries paying ..
... “ 1.1 billion euros to acquire 26.5% of Guoxuan High-tech Co Ltd, a maker of electric vehicle batteries, becoming its biggest shareholder. Volkswagen said Guoxuan, based in Hefei like JAC, will supply batteries to its EV models in China...”

GH is into Chile ...In wMay 2019 it was wanting to contribute to a lithium development centre in Chile https://www.bnamericas.com/en/news/corfo-receives-7-proposals-for-chile-lithium-tech-center

And VW has been into GH for a while?
According to Edison Group in Febrary this year; https://www.edisongroup.com/edison-explains/lithium-2/, , it had already (as of 19/02/20) ... “taken a stake in Guoxuan Hi-Tech, which has 13GWh of capacity in the form of three mega-factories, with a fourth in prospect”

We haven't seen the results of the feasability study undertaken by VW on SQM.
Sustainability is part of the VW mantra.
The solutions are limited when it comes to not enough water for mines, animals vegetables and people.
I guess we need to wait and see.
GH may well need to get its lithium from OZ spod for VW.
