Check out the following tables. Anyone could argue that the crash is over. Or we still have a leg to go..
1974 is not too bad. Most exchange got money back in 5 to 6 years. But 1929 is a horrible one.
The only thing I can explain is nobody knew what to do in 1929. But government had a lot of "tools" to deal with such crisis in 1974, including nationalised banks, etc.
