Have a look at "How millenials manage money" report (make sure you graph the PDF). Afterpay users earn more money than non-afterpay users and are more budget savy. The 1% default rate (and no rise during COVID-19) also contradicts your statement.

Yup and why would a millennial choose to use afterpay over googlepay / credit cards etc? What added benefit does APT provide over these other platforms?

If you need to pay in 4 installments then you dont have much money to begin with and your not a good credit risk.
