I believe the story of how BHP dropped the RIO takeover is worth telling.
Especially since I may have had a hand in it.
I was having a Johnny Walker Blue in my favourite watering hole, the Melbourne Club, when Don "Don't Argue" Argus walks up to me.
"Brad? Aren't you Brad Pitt?" he asks somewhat incredulously?
I smirked. Same old, same old mistaken identity problem which plagues my life.
"No, Mongombolo," I reply in a world-weary kinda way.
"Oh yes, 'Mongo'. You don't mind if I call you Mongo, do you?"
"Of course not, Donny. Go right ahead."
"A few heated discussions on HotCopper about the takeover," Argus muses.
"Look, Donny, to be frank, the boys and girls aren't happy about it. I'm just a small trader. But if I were on the board, I'd let it go. Let sanity prevail."
I then unloaded some cost-benefit analyses, debt ratios, the usual stuff.
We shook hands and Argus walked away. I continued to sip my scotch.
That was three weeks ago.
The rest is history.
