If they had of said "60 per cent of NEW servers will be placed in an Edge data centre by 2025" then I might have thought that a possibility, albeit a remote one.

Maybe that is what they meant, but even so - that figure seems way too high - there would need to be a fundamental paradigm shift in the use cases for DC's to want edge DC's over existing ones.

The only application I think which would currently depend on edge DC's is streamed gaming services. That model simply won't survive without edge DC's - the latency between input to getting back updated frames needs to be in the single digit ms range for gamers to consider it a viable alternative to a PC or console in their home.

Traditional DC's are fine for most all use cases already, and the economies of scale make them preferred.
