Saw the Silion article couple weeks back, but I've never seen this 2018 PDF document. Seems to go into more detail:

Back in 2018, the researchers where likely working on a fully-silicon anode, but it seems their discovery of the following drew Musk's attention:

"Silicone Anode Materials — A Si anode architecture is enabled by encapsulating micron sized Si
particles in a Li+ permeable polymer membrane. This flexible shell contains the volume
expansion upon lithiation, preserving the cell’s architectural integrity upon cycling. Because of
this, high concentration of micron-sized Si particles can be incorporated with traditional graphite
into the anode."

Seems plausible that Musk could have moved this into production by now. Lots of debatable stuff here. The document seems to support Musk's recent "carbon-silicon" tweet.
