My turn to throw some petrol on the fire, Tantalums price was pushed up by demand by the mobile phone industry 1995 onwards when we all had to have a mobile. The mobile phone market will continue to use large amounts of tantalum. The next BOOM industry is WiFi and wireless lan for home / office pc. These cards for the notebook computers are very small and this industry will consume a large amount of tantalum silver and gold over the next 5 years.....we will be having another tech boom in duet with resources.
The growth rates for WiFi next year is estimated to be 165% on this year. the year after it will be around 230% 0n this year.
Nothing comes close to the amount of capactance that tantalum provides in a small space....there are other companies trying to use other materials instead of tantalum but the new fast Gigahertz technology needs very low impedance filters and coupling capacitors, nothing will beat tantalum for price performance value.
