Senoj;
Your point is valid. But your talking about a complete roo-tooling of their factories and work processes and a competition lag in efficiency.
They need not bother compete on oil based effeciency from new technolodgy. The reciprocating engines produced by European manufacturers and to a lesser extent the Asian market are allready lightyears ahead.
The US should NOT play catch up, but compete on a higher level of efficiency if it wishes to remain competitive in the automotive industry.
Just look at Aviation. The amoutn of people that travel by air every year commercially, and 2 main manufacturers (Beoing and Airbus) who have outmanouvered and edged ahead of the comtetition that supply the consumer (airlines).
The next major technological leap that is endorsed by larger non-polluting continents/ governements will set the standard.
