FYI to investors (@eyeswideopen @jb13qz), 3d bioreactor is a fancy name for a large bioreactor by which the cells are grown in suspension but attached to micro-carriers (basically micro beads with surfaces the cells can attach to). Because MSCs are adherent cells, they like to be grown on the surface of the flask (2d culture) or on the micro-carriers in suspension (3d). These beads are very small, thus essentially increasing the total surface area of the culture in a 3d culture, increasing yield. In order word, we can change most basic bioreactors into 3d bioreactors by adding micro-carriers. The most important thing is to have the culturing conditions right so that the properties of these cells are not being compromised.
