If you think a set of lead-acid batteries that have been sitting in a hot mobile base station hut for 10 years is going to provide the level of service assurance that will be demanded after this summer's bushfires, then you need to do some more research on battery chemistry, real world experience, and replacement costs - including labour and disposal.
Generators and their maintenance are also a huge cost.
The Redflow battery is a unique product that has some significant benefits for the telco application. I'm certain we will see more of them deployed in Australia eventually. It makes sense that places in Africa and on islands would be faster to adopt this as the benefits are obvious and there is a lot less inertia in the existing platforms, practices, and current assets.
I naively bought in during the 2016 excitement, and seeing this back at 2.5c is a little devastating, but I'm far more confident now that we're on the way to profit and beyond.
