In the 1930s my father traded with Basuto in the Basutoland (now Lesotho) highlands. Goods were transported to the mountainous areas using donkeys and horses. The Basuto did not have access to money so used what they had of value at their disposal - wool. The donkeys and horses used to transport the goods to the Basutoland were used to retrieve the wool that was used in payment for the goods.
