    what I understand though is that people may have different meanings of the word bartering. That exchange of goods as a sort of value based quid pro quo exists everywhere I think - and did. I think there’s also a mutual “gift giving “ in which there is some sort of implied value equivalence but it’s not as direct. in addition are currencies which take different forms and have a more express value.

    I would have gone and looked at some of my books on the topic but they aren’t with me in melbourne. Sir peter buck, I’m pretty sure, recorded a lot of this information and he was not really an anthropologist but a scholar and a politician and Maori. (Actually a really interesting figure and I wonder how well some of his thinking might be received now)

    I know the Keesings both wrote about the topic and between them they covered a lot of different communities.

    i did realise however that I was a bit confused about @tigmeister ‘s views.
