I've picked apples, bagged spuds, cut asparagus and carted hay
as well as a dozen other ag pursuits.
The pay is poor.
The weather is not your friend.
Bailing and loading hay in November can be torture.
You are sweating in the heat.
Hay particles of all sizes get in your hair, clothing, stick to your body
They are bloody sharp.
Up and down a ladder with a bag of weight
on your front challenges leg muscles.
Potatoes is piecework too - paid by the sewn bag.
Just when you have finished and you are so tired you want to
lie on the ground -
a semi drives into the paddock and you have to load it.
That is one reason I became a journalist.
