..the other thing is, after some quick googling, the roman soldiers were given gifts on an important anniversary of service as well as land grants plus they got a share of the spoils on top of their regular pay... whether that was in gold, bronze coins, dinari and even drachma and this varied over history, but there probably would have been a gold standard to relate everything back to..I'm guessing.
The Dux or generals would obviously have been the higher paid than the centurions etc..
