Dave,
Merry Christmas to you too Dave and season's greetings to all my brothers and sisters on HC.
If winning a political argument is about the numbers, there is no question as to who won the GST debate. The Liberals won the GST but the really interesting question is who lost. I certainly lost and my losses were measured in real dollars and hours wasted filling in tax forms. No question either with Labor and the GST. They made it an issue in the following election and they lost.
The total losers in the GST debate were the Democrats. They gave the Liberals the winning numbers in the Senate but the aftermath effectively destroyed them as a party. I can't recall the Democrat's ever winning a senate seat after they gave a green light to the GST.
As to "winning" arguments on this forum, the number of posters on either side of the argument isn't a reliable guide. HC is a discussion site rather than a popularity contest. If there is any winning to be had it is in the diversity of communication the site offers and here everyone can be a winner. For example, two days ago I found out that Barry* can speak Braille. I wonder if I'm too old to learn.
