Actually, Toyota has been heavily invested in the development of solid state batteries for years and they own a bunch of patents, they partnered with Panasonic a couple of years ago in the development of this technology. But Panasonic has since said the technology is five to ten years away. a lot can happen in that time.
Toyota has banked on the development of Solid State batteries and Hydrogen viewing Lithium Ion as inferior. We will have to wait till battery day to find out where things are at with Tesla. Maybe Toyota will announce a game changing technology in a year or two of their own and be back in the game.
The problem for Toyota and VW and all the other companies is that it is very hard to have a foot in the old technology and the new technology and compete effectively with the company that has both feet in the new technology. Hence, Tesla share price.
The one commodity that looks solid for me in the transition is- Lithium.
