Starbust, that would be a very good system. Not practical for most given that we are so wrapped up in the present paradigm.
However, in my boating life, I have met many who are very happy to live simply and will not return. That is, they have opted out forever. Even those who had it thrust upon them by circumstance have found a different life and show no desire to re-enter the fray.
I could, quite happily, join them permanently but because of conventional expectations from family can enjoy their company for only a few weeks at a time. They are lovely people.
It's a shame that society as a whole cannot get along with each other to the same degree here in the suburbs.
