I think the DNS issue was regarding the expiration of a digital certificate. (SSL or something like that). Therefore traffic didn't matter, it was a timing issue that clearly some bozo at Telstra didn't think to fix like most companies would do before the problem occurs. They thought it was a malicious attack due to the amount of requests but it was from customers trying to check if the internet was back up.
