I haven't seen the podcast you're referring to but it sounds like an excellent foundation. So many seem so keen to push their views and invest tens of thousands of their hard earned without ever going beyond the headline numbers to look at the balance sheet and cash flow statements.
If I had my way every company would have to include the balance sheet and cashflow statement in their results presentation (not just buried in their reports). A handful do but I almost always have to go to those pages in their respective financial reports.
If I really had my way I'd require companies to report these separately (like dividends) for ease of comparison. It would surely save me some time and probably increase general financial literacy to boot.
Heck, some people might even realise that some mature companies fund part of their dividends by selling off assets and/or increasing their debt/gearing.
