Yea buying stakes in existing BNPL businesses is likely as close as they'll get to BNPL. I don't have the dates in front of me so I'm not sure when CBA and WBC bought their stakes but I'd be surprised if they made those decisions when interest rates started dropping last year.
Right now with a cash rate of 0.25% (expected to stay low for another 2.5 years at least) and the COVID-19 provisioning, I very much doubt you'll see these kind of purchases anytime soon.
And if you do that'll tell you a lot about the BNPL industry!
