No. VW will be using raw materials from others to develop their own cell technology.
To develop the best batteries you need the best materials
and Novonix is a specialist in developing high end battery materials.
I would see this as a strong likelihood of VW doing a deal of some sort with Novonix. This would give VW a foot inside Dalhousie which is the world leader on battery technology research. And gets them closer to what Tesla is doing.
That’s how I would read it.
The biggest news this week is Jeff Dahn’s anode free battery research breakthrough. 60% more energy dense 40% cheaper and no Graphite anode.
At this stage it is only good for 200 deep cycles but they have identified the choke points and will start working on those to improve longevity.
It is clear that Graphite will be phased out over the long term but there will still be a big market for decades to come. Probably the best route for Novonix is to demonstrate the scalability of its graphite technology and license it to the big boys. Given that Graphite will end up being in lesser grade batteries in 5-10 years there isn’t the room to get a return on a massive capital investment
into scaling up its graphite anode business.
I could be completely wrong but that’s my take on it for the moment.
