it doesnt seem like you know what youre talking about much if you cherry pick one nuclear plant and apply it to the whole of australia. reality is far more complex than that.

the biggest problem with nuclear builds these days is the lack of standardization in plant designs, as designs keep changing to reflect higher safety standards and the implementation of new technologies. once these problems can be overcome by one standard design that can be used globally or the introduction of smaller modular designs, the cost of builds will fall accordingly. this is when the world will really start taking advantage of the best source of electricity in the world, being nuclear. nuclear is significantly better than wind and solar combined when considering two key aspects- capacity factor and land usage.

as for coal, this is something that is not going away for a few decades minimum. there is just too much reliance on coal globally at the moment and renewable energies like solar and wind cant replace all of the coal capacity without increasing electricity prices significantly.

lets say solar and wind do replace coal though. the amount of natural gas capacity that will be required to back it up would make the price of NG skyrocket, making the combination extremely expensive, making intermittent sources and expensive backup the worst energy combination available. we all know the crux of manufacturing and industrialization is high electricity prices and wind and solar doesnt reduce electricity prices over the long run. prime example is germany- high electricity prices and the failure of emission reductions.

it will be a combination of a wide range of energy sources that will be used in the lead up to a significant transformation in energy production. and i do agree with the japanese to retire old inefficient coal plants and bring on newer coal plants and technologies.

australia can also benefit from nuclear, as the most reliable baseload source of power, when the time is right for the introduction of cheaper and smaller nuclear plants.

this subject is extremely complex and there are many more factors that play a role in the composition of a nations energy sources.

lets just hope that the people making the decisions for our energy production have less tunnel vision than you do, otherwise the energy complex will be costly and inefficient.
