Agreed. Projects do not get blocked just because the local community is against it. Although that is important a whole host of macro and micro considerations are in play, as if community support was the only criteria then no mining project would ever get approved. There are exceptions to this, which is what Santos is going through now in its application and the amount of negative attention this is getting. SVL is nowhere near this level.

From everything I have read it is v.likely that the mine will be approved IMO. Yes they have to go through the process and hard questions will be asked etc, but that is a necessity for the govt. to show local community that SVL jumped through all hoops and wasn't given easy treatment.

With the amount of jobs, tax and other benefits this mine will bring to Aus during an economic collapse, the Lib govt (or any govt) cannot afford to reject this, unless there are significant and real health and safety + environmental issues identified. To date, I cannot see such issues.
